Why Desmond Lim wins only 0.57% of Punggol East by-election?

Desmond Lim of SDA has won in the Punggol East By-Election ...... with 168 votes! 168 is a good number in Chinese! Desmond Lim won 0.57% of the votes. In the 2011 Punggol East election, Desmond Lim won 4.45% of the votes. Hence Desmond Lim has garnered almost 8 times fewer votes in the Punggol East By election this time round than in year 2011.

Lee Li Lian wins Punggol East By Election

Workers’ Party Lee Li LIan has won the Punggol East By Election with a decisive victory over PAP’s Koh Poh Koon of more than over 3,000 vote margin! Li Lian’s victory is quite surprising to me as I thought that Poh Koon stand a higher chance of winning as over the last few days of campaigning, there was heavy support from PAP including PM, DPM, PAP activists, PAP grassroots and PAP fellow MPs. Also over the week of campaigning, there was a flurry of new policies announced such as the MRT expansion plan, policies to encourage Singaporeans to procreate, policies in the arenas of Health and etc.

Punggol By Election

In the lead-up to the Punggol East By-Election since Nomination Day, a slew of new policies have been announced almost everyday. Before the Nomination Day, property cooling measures were announced.

Then right after Nomination Day, first, we have the MRT expansion plan. Then, we have the announcement of policies in the arenas of health and to encourage parenthood. When the MRT expansion plan was announced, I read of an incident cited in the newspapers of a resident in Punggol saving up travelling time by up to 15 minutes should he decide to travel to a neighbour town. I do not know whether it is a coincidence that a Punggol case study was mentioned and whether it was again another coincidence that so many good measures were announced in the lead-up to the Punggol East by-election.

The Workers' Party rally will be held tonight. At this time of writing, it has been raining since yesterday midnight. I believe the rain will affect the turnout at the Workers' Party as the field will be wet. The colours of Singapore’s politics

Judging from the colour of the uniforms of the different political parties in Singapore, it is clear that the colour of the uniforms of the parties are as follows (in the sequence of the ROYGBIV of the rainbow colour):

Red- SDP

Orange-NSP

Yellow-RP

Green-SDA

Blue-WP

The two other colours of the rainbow, Indigo and Violet are currently not associated with any political party here.

Cross Island Line, Jurong Region Line: New MRT Lines

The Land Transport Authority announced today that there will be two additional MRT lines: Cross Island Line and the Jurong Region Line in the decades to come. I believe this piece of news could not be more timely, coming right after the Nomination Day of the Punggol East By-Election when transport woes in Singapore could be a hotly debated topic for the Opposition Parties during their rallies.

SDA (Singapore Democratic Alliance) will field Desmond Lim Bak Chuan to contest in the Punggol East By-Election. Desmond Lim was the candidate to forfeit his $16,000 deposit when he garnered only around 4.45% of the votes in Punggol East ward in the General Election 2011.

SDP (Singapore Democratic Party) has announced that it will not contest the Punggol East By-Election. This comes as a surprise to many Singaporeans as Dr Chee Soon Juan, the Secretary-General of SDP has earlier said that the party will introduce its candidate for the by-election today.

The Workers’ Party will be fielding Lee Li Lian to contest in the Punggol East By-Election as announced in its media press conference this morning. Lee Li Lian was the Workers’ Party candidate who contested in the Punggol East constituency in the General Election 2011. Prior to today’s announcement, media reports were abuzz that the Workers’ Party will be fielding either of its two NCMPs: Gerard Giam or Yee Jenn Jong to contest in the Punggol East By-Election.

I think it will be a multi-corner fight in Punggol East by-election. The winner, I believe will be the ruling party as there are so many opposition parties apart from the WP which will like to contest in the by-election. It will be good to see only PAP vs WP in the by-election but many other political parties seem quite keen to secure a seat in the parliament.

Yam Ah Mee to join SMRT?

Yam Ah Mee will retire as PA's Chief Executive Director and as reported, he will be joining the private sector. I believe Yam Ah Mee, a former, RSAF BG, will join SMRT as its spokeperson. SMRT has not found an official spokeperson after Stephen Forshaw from Temasek rejected the role. Yam, as PA's Head will be well-poised to take on this role. Most importantly, Yam Ah Mee was previously the CEO of LTA and Deputy Secretary (Transport), hence he has domain knowledge and experience of land transport matters which would be useful!

Koh Poh Koon: PAP candidate for Punggol East by-election ?

Koh Poh Koon, a surgeon at Mount Elizabeth may be PAP candidate for the Punggol East by-election which will be held on 26 Jan 2013 if there is more than one candidate for the by-election according to news today. Polling Day will be on 16 Jan 2013. From what I have read, Koh Poh Koon, is a grassroots volunteer in Punggol hence it is all the more natural for the ruling party to send in someone whom residents have at least seen before working on the ground to contest in the Punggol East by-election.

Halimah Yacob is, as reported, slated to become the next Speaker of Singapore Parliament. When Halimah Yacob’s name was surfaced yesterday as the name of Singapore’s next Speaker, I was caught by surprise though I thought I have somehow left her name out of the possible candidates of Singapore’s next speaker in an earlier post as afterall, Halimah has a legal background as well (Master in Law). A legal background is often viewed as a good criterion for the Speaker’s position though it is not the pre-requisite.

Today’s The Straits Time reported that Ong Ye Kung will be joining Keppel Corp as a Director. Prior to this news, there was wide speculation on where Ong Ye Kung will be headed to. Initially, I have thought that Ong Ye Kung will be appointed as CEO of Capitaland after Liew Mun Leong made known his plan to retire, but that post went to Lim Ming Yan. Then there were others who thought Ong Ye Kung would be appointed as CEO of SMRT after Saw Phaik Hwa but that post went to Desmond Kuek.

MediaCorp keeps screening “Rush Hour”

MediaCorp keeps screening “Rush Hour” and its sequel during the Christmas and New Year holidays. “Rush Hour” was shown on Christmas Day or its eve. “Rush Hour 3” was shown on New Year’s Eve and “Rush Hour 2” was shown on New Year Day. I don’t know why Mediacorp keeps showing movies which was shown on National TVs for so many times already.

First work day of the New Year

Today is the first work day of a brand New Year. I believe many Singaporeans are quite reluctant to go back to work after two weeks of holidaying. Me too, to a certain extent, as the rainy morning made me reluctant to come out from my slumber.
