Though Singapore hawkers (hawkers of Tian Tian Chicken rice and Katong 328 Laksa) have triumped over Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay, to me, it seems that Gordon Ramsay is the real Hawker Hero instead. Why do I say so? Well, how do you expect a hero to be greeted when he is in a public place? Yes, a hero will be mobbed by the public in masses and that was the treatment Gordon received when he was in Maxwell Hawker Centre last week. Don’t you think Gordon is being treated like a hero?
On the other hand, after the competition, our two local hawkers return back to their hawker livelihood and continue to dish out humble and great food for Singaporeans. They do not look like a hero. I hope the President of Singapore can confer the Public Service Star Award (BBM) to the two hawkers, each from Tian Tian Chicken Rice and Katong 328 Laksa. I feel that the National Day Parade Organizing Committee should have these two hawkers make a special entry into the National Day Parade with them dressed in their hawker attires, wearing their BBM medals and being cheered by the thousands of spectators as they make their entries, giving them an applause befitting of a hero!
