I have heard of asbestos before but did not know that asbestos can cause health problems; all the more I did not know that our buildings (those which were built before 1989) probably contain asbestos till I read of a recent report that the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) is currently looking into safer ways to remove asbestos from buildings. After this report, I think I should stay away from old buildings undergoing renovation lest I contract some of the diseases related to asbestos.
I wonder why the authorities like the Health Promotion Board does not constantly highlight the risk of asbestos to Singaporeans since most of our HDB flats were built before 1989? I am quite well-read hence if I myself do not know that asbestos can cause health hazards, what’s more with the other Singaporeans who are so busy working and working everyday?
It was reported in the same article which I read that asbestos-related diseases are on the rise; I think it has to do with the lack of awareness among Singaporeans of asbestos and the harm it causes, especially those whose work revolves around constant contact with asbestos; it is no surprise they may not know that they are dealing with asbestos in the first place!
Another health issue Health Promotion Board should tackle now is hair loss and hair thinning among increasing number of our people- I also suffer from hair loss too-, more on that in another article.
