Halimah Yacob: Singapore’s next Speaker

Halimah Yacob is, as reported, slated to become the next Speaker of Singapore Parliament. When Halimah Yacob’s name was surfaced yesterday as the name of Singapore’s next Speaker, I was caught by surprise though I thought I have somehow left her name out of the possible candidates of Singapore’s next speaker in an earlier post as afterall, Halimah has a legal background as well (Master in Law). A legal background is often viewed as a good criterion for the Speaker’s position though it is not the pre-requisite.

I read too that should Halimah Yacob be appointed the Speaker, she would have to give up her appointment as a Minister-of-State in order to assume the Speaker position. I believe Halimah Yacob would return to NTUC, where she hailed from, after becoming the Speaker to assume her previous position of Assistant Secretary-General of NTUC. Halimah may, after that, be considered for the top post of the next Secretary-General of NTUC.

Halimah is a vocal MP, often giving her take on social issues. I think it is not easy to hear her views on social issues if she becomes the next Speaker. Even the current Deputy Speaker cum Acting Speaker, Charles Chong is a vocal MP. I remembered him giving his take after the “Permanent Secretary Tan Yong Soon cooking saga” which led to some debate over his use of the phrase “lesser mortals”.
